Top-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer won in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open in Doha on Wednesday.

Nadal beat Karol Beck of Slovakia 6-1, 6-2, and Federer defeated Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-3.

Andy Roddick edged Arnaud Clement of France 6-3, 7-5.

Andy Murray defeated Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-2, 6-4.

MORE TENNIS: Venus Williams and Coco Vandeweghe of the United States lost in straight sets to Team Europe at an exhibition tournament. Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal beat Team Americas 6-4, 7-5. . . . James Blake's bid for a third Hopman Cup title ended when the U.S. lost the mixed doubles match to Germany at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia. The Americans lost 2-1 to Germany when Blake and Meghann Shaughnessy fell to Nicolas Kiefer and Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 3-6 and 10-7 in the tiebreaker. . . . Top-seeded Ana Ivanovic fought off two match points and rallied for a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-1 victory over Roberta Vinci of Italy to advance to the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International in Australia. . . . Elena Dementieva and Caroline Wozniaki reached the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. Top-seeded Dementieva beat New Zealander Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-3, while second-seeded Wozniaki beat Jill Craybas 6-4, 7-5. . . . Nikolay Davydenko will miss the Australian Open because of a heel injury that bothered him last season and has caused "unbearable" pain the past two weeks.

Baseball Giambi returns to roots, A's

Jason Giambi is returning to his professional Baseball roots with the Oakland Athletics.

Giambi and the A's finalized a one-year contract with an option, bringing the free-agent designated hitter and first baseman back to the place he began his big-league career. The sides had reached a preliminary agreement earlier this week but Giambi still needed to complete the obligatory physical for the deal to get done.

MORE Baseball: Relief pitcher Logan Kensing and the Florida Marlins agreed on a $660,000, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. . . . Former Pirates managing general partner Kevin McClatchy has sold his remaining shares in the team, ending a 13-year relationship that began with the newspaper heir likely preventing the club from leaving Pittsburgh. McClatchy's spot on the five-man Pirates board of directors will not immediately be filled. . . . Jerry Hairston Jr. stayed with the Cincinnati Reds, agreeing to a $2 million, one-year contract. . . . 2B Marcus Giles' minor-league contract was announced by the Philadelphia Phillies, and the former all-star was among nine players invited to spring training by the World Series champions.

Hockey Canadiens break away

Andrei Markov and Robert Lang scored power-play goals 2:08 apart to break open a tight game in the third period and lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers.

MORE HOCKEY: Ottawa Senators forward Jarkko Ruutu was suspended by the NHL for two games without pay for biting Buffalo Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters. The NHL said Ruutu will lose $37,707 in pay and miss Ottawa's game at Boston today and a home game against the New York Rangers on Saturday.

Motorsports De Villiers takes 5th stage

A Frenchman became the latest fatality in the Dakar Rally, when Nasser AL Attiyah reclaimed the race's overall lead and NASCAR star Robbie Gordon was third in a fifth stage won by Giniel De Villiers. The body of motorcyclist Pascal Terry, missing since Sunday, was found in dense bush between Santa Rosa and Puerto Madryn. The first-time Dakar racer was near his motorbike without his helmet, but with food and water beside him. An autopsy revealed he died of pulmonary edema.

De Villiers completedthe 314-mile stage in 5 hours, 47 minutes, 43 seconds. He was 2:18 ahead of German teammate Dieter Depping. Gordon, driving a Hummer, was 4:12 back.

Marc Coma of Spain continued to lead the motorbike class, but his lead over American Jonah Street was slashed from 43 minutes to 27 because of a flat tire. Street won the stage in 6:41:06.

MORE MOTORSPORTS: A co-founder of Morgan-McClure Motorsports has agreed to plead guilty to tax fraud charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Ramseyer said that in exchange for Larry McClure's pleas, prosecutors will dismiss fraud charges for the painting of show-car trailers.
