Pittsburgh Pirates Roster Report 2009-05-16

Pittsburgh Pirates Roster Report 2009-05-16
--LHP Paul Maholm was hit on the left index finger on a bouncer by Colorado's Ryan Spilborghs in the seventh inning. However, he was able to stay in the game and said afterwards that he felt fine and was in no danger of missing his next start.

--RHP Craig Hansen threw off a mound Friday for the first time since going on the disabled list April 20 with neck spasms. He will do so again Friday and, if all goes well, report to extended spring training in Bradenton, Fla., on Monday. Hansen will pitch three times in extended spring before a decision is made on if he is ready to join one of the farm clubs for a rehabilitation assignment.

--OF Craig Monroe made his seventh start of the season, playing right field in place of Brandon Moss against Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa and going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. It was just the second time Monroe was in the lineup since April 27, his other start coming last Thursday, as the Pirates were facing a lefty for just the second time in 21 games. Monroe is 10-for-29 (.345) with 11 RBI in his starts but 0-for-11 as a pinch hitter.

--C Ryan Doumit said he is making significant progress in his recovery from the broken right wrist he suffered April 20. He believes he will beat the loose timetable of July 1 that has been set for his return.

--RHP Ian Snell will start Saturday night against Colorado. He has lost his last three starts.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Craig Hansen (neck spasms) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20. He played catch May 3 for the first time since getting hurt, and he will throw off a mound May 15. There was no timetable for when he might start a rehab assignment.

C Ryan Doumit (broken bone in right wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20. He had surgery April 23, and he should be back by no later than July 1.

LHP Phil Dumatrait (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was pitching in extended spring training in mid-April.
