--SS Brian Bixler was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis to make room on the roster for SS Jack Wilson, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Bixler looked overmatched in eight games with the Pirates as he hit .200 with two RBIs while striking out in 18 of his 26 plate appearances. Bixler has struck out 54 times in 146 plate appearances in his career.
--RF Brandon Moss went 3-for-4 with his first home run since Sept. 2 and two RBIs after entering the game hitless in his last 15 at-bats. Moss, who is hitting .200 this season, said he was prepared to hit the inside fastball for the first time all year after doing some pregame work with hitting coach Don Long. --1B Adam LaRoche hit his sixth home run of the season but first since April 26 when he connected in the fifth inning. LaRoche's slump had reached 1-for-30 when he struck out in his first two at-bats.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Matt Capps (sore right elbow) was unavailable May 5-10. He returned to action May 12.
SS Jack Wilson (sprained left middle finger) went on the 15-day disabled list April 25. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis on May 8, and he was activated May 12.
RHP Craig Hansen (neck spasms) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20. He played catch May 3 for the first time since getting hurt.
C Ryan Doumit (broken bone in right wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20. He had surgery April 23, and he will be out eight to 10 weeks.
LHP Phil Dumatrait (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was pitching in extended spring training in mid-April.
