--CF Nate McLouth returned to action Friday night and went 1-for-4 after missing the previous six games with a strained oblique muscle in his right side. McLouth was cleared to play after taking batting practice on Thursday's off day and again before Friday's game without feeling pain.
--INF/OF Eric Hinske stayed in the lineup for a seventh straight game in right field after getting regular starts while McLouth was sidelined. While manager John Russell reiterated that OF Brandon Moss is still the primary right fielder, he wanted Hinske to start against Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo. Hinske had been 11-for-23 (.478) in his career against Arroyo before going hitless in three at bats against him Friday night and 0-for-4 overall.
--LHP Zach Duke has been the model of consistency so far this season as he allowed one run for the fourth time in his five starts to lower his ERA to 2.21. However, Duke took the loss as his record fell to 3-2. Duke also has a 2.43 ERA in his last 10 starts, dating to last Aug. 27.
--LF Nyjer Morgan went 2-for-4 to get back on track after his first rough patch of the season. Morgan had been 0-for-8 in the previous two games since his eight-game hitting streak ended.
--OF Jose Tabata, one of the Pirates' top prospects and a member of the 40-man roster, will miss at least a month at Class AA Altoona with a strained right hamstring. He suffered the injury Tuesday while running out a groundball.
