Pittsburgh Pirates Roster Report 2009-04-28
The Pirates had a rough week, losing two regulars in the span of five days as C Ryan Doumit suffered a broken right wrist and SS Jack Wilson also went on the disabled list with a sprained left middle finger. Youngsters will be counted on to fill both spots. Rookie Jason Jaramillo will be the primary catcher and be backed up by another rookie, Robinzon Diaz. Brian Bixler, who spent part of last season with the Pirates, likely will get the majority of playing time at shortstop, with veteran INF Ramon Vazquez also pitching in.

PLAYER NEWS:

--SS Jack Wilson will return to Pittsburgh on Tuesday to have his sprained left middle finger examined by hand specialist Mark Baratz for the third time in 10 days. Wilson missed four of 10 games with the injury before being placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday.

--CF Nate McLouth missed his fourth straight game with a strained oblique muscle in his right side. It appears he won't play until again until Friday, when the Pirates open a five-game homestand against Cincinnati.

--C Ryan Doumit rejoined the team after undergoing right wrist surgery Thursday. He likely will be sidelined until late June and is wearing a bone stimulator three hours a day in hopes of speeding up the healing process.

--RHP Jeff Karstens drew the ire of the Brewers after hitting Ryan Braun with a pitch in the third, two innings after Braun had homered. Pirates manager John Russell, though, insisted that Karstens had no intent behind the pitch and was struggling with his command, as evidenced by allowing three home runs in five innings.

MEDICAL WATCH:
