Switch-hitting Delwyn Young, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for either two minor-leaguers to be named or cash considerations, isn't likely to get many starts -- the Pirates are set in the outfield with Nyjer Morgan, Nate McLouth and Brandon Moss as the starters and Craig Monroe in reserve. While Young figures to be mainly a pinch hitter, he will begin working out at second base and third base in an effort to increase his versatility. Young was a second baseman coming up through the Dodgers' farm system, and the Pirates think he has the arm strength to play third.
PLAYER NEWS: --C Ryan Doumit is expected to miss at least two months with a broken scaphoid bone in his right wrist, which was discovered Tuesday during a CT scan. He will have surgery Thursday and won't be able to start rehabilitation for at least a month. Doumit, who is the Pirates' cleanup hitter, was injured while swinging at a pitch in a game against Atlanta.
--C Jason Jaramillo was in the starting lineup Tuesday night against Florida for the second straight game with Ryan Doumit injured, and he went 1-for-2 with an RBI double and an intentional walk. Manager John Russell indicated that Jaramillo, a switch-hitting rookie, will get the bulk of the playing time with Doumit out because of his above-average defensive ability.
--C Robinzon Diaz was recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis on Tuesday as Ryan Doumit went on the 15-day disabled list. Diaz, a rookie, was hitting .350 with three RBIs in six games. He is considered a better hitter than Jason Jaramillo but slightly below average defensively.
MEDICAL WATCH:
C Ryan Doumit (broken bone in right wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 20. He will have surgery April 23 and will be out eight to 10 weeks.
LHP Phil Dumatrait (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was pitching in extended spring training in mid-April.
