Switch-hitting Delwyn Young, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for either two minor-leaguers to be named or cash considerations, isn't likely to get many starts -- the Pirates are set in the outfield with Nyjer Morgan, Nate McLouth and Brandon Moss as the starters and Craig Monroe in reserve. While Young figures to be mainly a pinch hitter, he will begin working out at second base and third base in an effort to increase his versatility. Young was a second baseman coming up through the Dodgers' farm system, and the Pirates think he has the arm strength to play third.
PLAYER NEWS: --C Ryan Doumit sat out Monday's night game with a sore right wrist and an MRI and X-ray both proved inconclusive. He will undergo a CT scan Tuesday in an effort to determine if he has any structural damage in the wrist, which he injured Sunday while swinging at a pitch in a game against Atlanta.
--C Jason Jaramillo went 2-for-4 Monday night in his second career start behind the plate. Jaramillo, though, said he was more excited about catching a combined two-hit shutout by Ross Ohlendorf, Tyler Yates and Jesse Chavez because defense is his first priority.
--RHP Ross Ohlendorf notched his first victory in his eighth start with the Pirates, pitching seven shutout innings and allowing two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Ohlendorf had gone 0-5 with a 5.88 ERA dating back to last season but said the difference in this game was that he was able to throw all four of his pitches for strikes consistently. It was Ohlendorf's second major-league victory as he won in relief for the New York Yankees last May 30 at Minnesota.
--RHP Jeff Karstens pitches Tuesday night against Florida and expects to show more consistency than in his first start of the season last Thursday against Houston, in which he walked five in four innings. Karstens will be pitching on normal rest this time after going two weeks between his last start of spring training and first start of the regular season because of off days and rainouts.
MEDICAL WATCH:
C Ryan Doumit (right wrist) sat out the April 20 game and was undergoing tests.
LHP Phil Dumatrait (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He could be ready to join the Pirates rotation by the end of April.
