--INF Luis Cruz was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis to clear a spot on the active roster for OF Delmon Young, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade. Cruz played in only one game this season, going 1-for-2. The Pirates like his defense and versatility but want to see him improve as a hitter.

--INF Ramon Vazquez got the start at shortstop with Wilson sidelined and went 0-for-2 with a walk. Vazquez, signed as a free agent in the offseason, has started five of the first 10 games this season, three at third base and two at shortstop.

--LF Nyjer Morgan's five-game hitting streak ended as he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. However, Morgan is proving that he deserves a long look in the leadoff spot as he is hitting .352 in his last 42 games, dating to last Aug. 19.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Jack Wilson (strained left middle finger) was scratched from the lineup April 15, although he pinch-hit. He returned to the lineup on April 16, but was scratched on April 17.

LHP Phil Dumatrait (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He could be ready to join the Pirates rotation by the end of April.
