--3B Andy LaRoche was out of the lineup for a second consecutive game after making three errors in the season's first two games. INF Ramon Vazquez again started at third and went 1-for-2 with a walk and the Pirates' lone hit, a seventh-inning single off Chris Carpenter. LaRoche pinch-hit in the eighth and struck out.

--C Jason Jaramillo will make his major league debut Saturday at Cincinnati. Manager John Russell had thought about playing him Thursday in a day game after a night game but instead opted to start C Ryan Doumit.

--RHP Romulo Sanchez cleared waivers and was assigned to Class AAA Indianapolis. He had been designated for assignment last week. Sanchez spent parts of the past two seasons with the Pirates, going 1-0 with one save and a 4.60 ERA in 24 relief appearances.

--2B Freddy Sanchez became just the third Pirates player in the last 30 years to have multiple hits in each of the first three games of the season. Sanchez went 8-for-14 in that streak, which ended Thursday with an 0-for-4 game.

MEDICAL WATCH:

1B Adam LaRoche (flu) didn't play April 9, and he is doubtful for April 10.

LHP Phil Dumatrait (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in August 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He has been slow to recover.
