Pittsburgh Pirates Roster Report 2009-04-07

The Pirates have had a rather uneventful spring when it comes to roster moves, with no major injuries that require disabled-list stints or players who have come out of nowhere to make the opening-day roster.

PLAYER NOTES:

--RHP Ian Snell will start Tuesday night against the Cardinals. His availability had been in some doubt after he missed his final start of spring training last Thursday because of the flu. Snell had a two-inning tune-up in a minor league game Saturday in Bradenton, Fla.

--RHP Jeff Karstens joined the team Monday after staying behind at spring training to pitch five innings in a minor league game Sunday. That keeps him in line to make his season debut Friday night at Cincinnati.

--SS Jack Wilson's three-run double in the ninth inning equaled the number of RBIs he had during the entire exhibition season in 52 plate appearances. Wilson spent the spring changing his batting stance, primarily keeping his hands lower.

--LHP John Grabow, who got credit for the win after getting the last two outs of the eighth inning, made his 346th career relief appearance to move into 12th place on the Pirates' all-time list for games pitched. The record is 802 by ElRoy Face.

--3B Andy LaRoche moved up one spot in the batting order to No. 6 after batting seventh most of the spring. RF Brandon Moss was dropped one notch to No. 7. Manager John Russell wants the right-handed Andy LaRoche to split up two left-handed hitters, 1B Adam LaRoche, who hits fifth, and Moss, in the batting order.
