Pittsburgh Pirates Notes, Quotes 2008-09-13
--RHP Jeff Karstens, scheduled to start Saturday night against St. Louis, may have his turn in the rotation pushed back to Sunday because of an abscessed tooth. Karstens was treated by a dentist Friday morning but the left side of his face was still quite swollen Friday night. RHP Ian Snell will start Saturday if Karstens is unavailable. Snell is scheduled to start Sunday but would be pitching on a normal four days of rest because his last outing was Monday night at Houston.

--2B Freddy Sanchez was not in the starting lineup for a third straight game because of blurred vision in his right eye. Sanchez was examined by a specialist Friday morning and treated with eye drops. Sanchez, who is hopeful of playing Saturday night, may need to start wearing a contact lens in the right eye as the doctor determined his vision has slipped from 20-15 last year to 20-25.

--LHP Paul Maholm became the first Pirates pitcher since Kip Wells in 2002 to have two hits in an inning as he had a pair of singles in a six-run fifth. The second hit drop in a pair of runs and "lifted" Maholm's batting average to .129 this season.

--RHP Daniel McCutchen, who finished the season at Indianapolis after being acquired from the New York Yankees in a six-player trade on July 26, will spend the weekend with the Pirates but not be added to the roster. The Pirates want McCutchen to get acclimated to the major-league atmosphere and also plan to have two other prospects from Indianapolis, 3B Neil Walker and CF Andrew McCutchen, join the club for a few days next week.

--SS Jack Wilson and Walker were honored for their community commitment along with Class AA Altoona OF Brad Corley, high Class A Lynchburg OF Jared Keel, low Class A Hickory OF Austin McClune, short season Class A State College C Josue Peley and rookie Bradenton RHP Jean Garavito during pre-game Roberto Clemente day ceremonies.

BY THE NUMBERS: 20-49 -- The Pirates' record at Houston's Minute Maid Park since it opened in 2000 after being swept in a four-game series by the Astros that ended Sept. 11.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's going to be a lot of fun someday. I know the city of Pittsburgh is dying for a winner and we're going to do everything we can to make that happen." -- Manager John Russell, trying to put a happy face on the franchise's 16th consecutive losing season, which ties the major-league record set by the 1933-48 Philadelphia Phillies.
