Capps came on to protect a 1-0 lead and promptly gave up a double to Garrett Atkins and a home run to Brad Hawpe. Matt Murton added an RBI single with two outs.
Capps admitted to feeling a sharp pain in his elbow when he took his jersey off after suffering a blown save May 5 against Milwaukee, a game in which he gave up four runs in one inning. He rested for a week, then came back and made two scoreless appearances before getting ripped Friday.
"I'm fine," Capps said. "The elbow is not a problem."
However, Capps is 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA and two blown saves in eight opportunities this season. He has allowed 19 hits and six walks in 11 innings. By comparison, he walked only five batters in 53 innings last season.
While Capps says he is fine, he is at a loss to explain one of the most prolonged struggled of his five-year career.
"I don't know," he said. "My pitches aren't doing what they are supposed to do. I tried to go in on Hawpe and thought I had the fastball inside enough but I didn't and he hit it out. That's how it's going for me right now."
ROCKIES 3, PIRATES 1: Closer Matt Capps gave up three runs in the ninth inning, including a two-run home run to Brad Hawpe, as he failed to hold a 1-0 lead and the Pirates lost for the 10th time in their last 12 games. Starter Paul Maholm pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
