Pittsburgh Pirates Inside Pitch 2009-04-22
The Pirates are off to an 8-6 start, which is something to celebrate for a franchise that has had 16 straight losing seasons, but the optimism became tempered Tuesday when it was learned catcher Ryan Doumit will miss at least two months with a broken scaphoid bone in his right wrist.

Doumit will have surgery Thursday and won't be able to begin rehabilitation until a month after that. He was injured Sunday while taking a swing in a game against Atlanta.

"You feel stuff like that all the time when you swing or land on your wrist when you're diving for a ball and don't think anything about it," Doumit said. "I never thought it would lead to this. It's frustrating, to say the least."

Doumit was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and rookie catcher Robinzon Diaz was recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis. Diaz, 25, was hitting .350 with three RBIs in six Class AAA games.

Rookie catcher Jason Jaramillo was in the starting lineup Tuesday night for a second straight night, going 1-for-2 with an RBI double in a 3-2 win over Florida.

Manager John Russell said Jaramillo, a switch hitter, figures to get the bulk of playing time behind the plate until Doumit returns. Jaramillo has played in just four major league games and Diaz in just three, but general manager Neal Huntington said there is no sense of urgency for the Pirates to acquire a veteran catcher.

"We're always looking to better ourselves, but we would only make a move if it truly made us a better club," Huntington said.

Doumit is hitting .244 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 12 games this season. The pitchers have also been praising him for helping them compile a 3.00 ERA, which leads the National League after they finished last in that category last season with a 5.10 mark.

"We're disappointed for Ryan because he's worked really hard and he's a big part of the team and what we're doing here in Pittsburgh," Russell said. "You feel extremely bad for him because it's going to be tough on him not to be playing. As a team, though, we'll be fine because the guys will pull together."

PIRATES 3, MARLINS 2: Jeff Karstens allowed only one run and three hits in six innings to notch his first victory of the season. Matt Capps pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save in as many opportunities, preserving a one-run lead by getting Cody Ross to hit into an inning-ending double play. Freddy Sanchez had three hits, including a double and a home run.
