Pittsburgh Pirates Inside Pitch 2009-04-21

The Pirates are holding their breath on the status of catcher Ryan Doumit after he missed Monday night's 8-0 win over the Florida Marlins with a sore right wrist.

Doumit underwent an MRI and X-ray Monday, and both were inclusive after he felt a pulling sensation in the wrist during Sunday's game against Atlanta. He is scheduled for a CT scan Tuesday, and the Pirates doctors hope it will reveal the extent of the problem.

If Doumit has ligament damage and needs surgery, it would be a big blow for the Pirates, who do not have another experienced catcher in their organization. Furthermore, Doumit is also a large part of the Pirates' power-challenged lineup as the cleanup hitter.

Rookie Jason Jaramillo started for Doumit on Monday night and went 2-for-4 in just his third major league game. Jaramillo beat out Robinzon Diaz for the backup catching job in spring training. Diaz, now at Class AAA Indianapolis, also has just three games of major league experience, and Miguel Perez, the catcher at Class AA Altoona, has played in just two major league games.

Pirates manager John Russell, though, has faith in Jaramillo, who made the club over Diaz in spring training because of his solid defense.

"Jason has a really good feel for the game for a young catcher," Russell said. "He's working really well with (pitching coach) Joe Kerrigan and handles our pitchers well. The reason we brought him north with us out of spring training is because of his defense, and we feel very comfortable with him behind the plate."

PIRATES 8, MARLINS 0: Ross Ohlendorf pitched seven innings for his second major league win and first as a starter as he combined with Tyler Yates and Jesse Chavez on a two-hit shutout to end Florida's six-game winning streak. Ohlendorf (1-2) walked one and struck out five to notch his first win since last May 30 for the New York Yankees against Minnesota. Nate McLouth had four RBI, including a long three-run home run in the sixth inning that was estimated at 433 feet and made the score 8-0.
