The Pirates are healthy, with only one player on the disabled list. However, their manager isn't so fortunate.
John Russell underwent surgery Friday morning to have deposits caused by gout removed from his left elbow. Russell had been hurting for the last 10 days, and his elbow had swelling to the size of a baseball at times. At least Russell did not have to worry about managing Friday night. The scheduled game against the Reds at Cincinnati was postponed after only a 20-minute delay. The game was not immediately rescheduled.
Russell also has suffered with gout in his knee and feet in the past. Dr. Angelo Colosimo, team physician for the Cincinnati Bengals, performed the surgery.
