The Pirates have scored 10 runs in each of their three Saturday games this season. This time, they got it done with key contributions from some bench players.
Jason Jaramillo doubled and scored in each of his first two at-bats. In five games since taking over for Ryan Doumit (fractured wrist), Jaramillo is batting .388 (7 for 18) with three runs scored, three walks, one RBI and a stolen base.
quot;I feel comfortable,quot; Jaramillo said. quot;It's one of those things where you get in there and you feel confident.quot;
Center fielder Nate McLouth (strained oblique) missed his second game in a row. Nyjer Morgan started in center, flanked by reserve outfielders Eric Hinske and Craig Monroe.
That trio combined for seven hits and four RBI.
Wilson was scratched just minutes before the game. He was replaced in the lineup by Ramon Vazquez, who singled and scored a run.
Shortstop Brian Bixler was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis and will join the team today.
quot;We have the kind of team that's able to fill some holes,quot; Wilson said. quot;To not have some of our big guns and still be productive, it says a lot about our depth.quot;
Padres starter Shawn Hill (1-1) was yanked after just two innings due to soreness in his right bicep. The right-hander gave up three runs on five hits, walked one and hit a batter.
Pirates left-hander Zach Duke (3-1) went 8.1 innings and gave up six hits, walked two and struck out five. It's the first time Duke has won back-to-back road starts since he went 4-0 away from PNC Park as a rookie in 2005.
quot;I felt pretty sharp from the first inning on,quot; said Duke, who lowered his ERA to 2.43. quot;The fastball command was there and that's really the key.quot;
It was clear from the start, Hill was going to be no match for the Pirates . Morgan walked on five pitches ? just his sixth walk in 76 plate appearances. Freddy Sanchez ripped a ground-rule double to left.
Monroe's single scored Morgan. Sanchez scored when Adam LaRoche bounced into a double play.
Jaramillo began the second with a double to left. He scored on Sanchez's two-out single.
With Ramon Vazquez at first base in the fourth, Jaramillo lined a double to right. Duke and Morgan delivered sacrifice flies, pushing the Pirates' lead to 5-0.
In the fifth, Hinske hustled home from first base on Andy LaRoche's two-out, bloop double to right. Monroe hit a two-run double in the sixth.
The Padres finally got to Duke in the sixth. Scott Hairston tripled ? center fielder Morgan took a bad route to the ball, which rolled to the wall ? and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's ground out.
