Duke (3-1) allowed one run and six hits and struck out five while walking two in 8 1-3 innings. He also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth when the Pirates extended their lead to 5-0.

The last time Duke won back-to-back road games was during his rookie season in 2005 when he went 4-0 in seven road starts. He beat the Cardinals in St. Louis on April 8 in his first road start this season.

Pittsburgh had 12 of its 14 hits against Padres starter Shawn Hill and reliever Josh Geer, scoring twice in the first, fourth, sixth, and eighth innings.

Monroe had three hits and three RBIs and Sanchez also had three hits and scored three times for the Pirates. Andy LaRoche extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double, single and two RBIs.

Hill (1-1) had to leave the game after two innings with soreness in his right biceps muscle. He gave up three runs and five hits.

Geer allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings.

Duke lost his shutout bid in the sixth when Scott Hairston tripled and scored on a groundout by Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who singled in the ninth, has reached base in all 17 games this season.

The Padres were wearing their retro uniforms from the inaugural 1969 season when they went 52-110.
