"Dr. Baratz needed more information, and that's what he hopes this scan will bring," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said last night after an 8-0 shutout of the Florida Marlins at PNC Park. "Right now, we really don't have any other update."
Huntington did not specify the type of injury the Pirates' medical staff is seeking to diagnose, but it is believed to be related to the ligaments on the wrist. X-rays did not detect a fracture.
Doumit first felt the pain with a swing in his second at-bat against the Atlanta Braves Sunday afternoon, when he grounded out to second base. He remained in the game for four more innings before being replaced by Jason Jaramillo, one of four regulars pulled from what would be an 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
The Pirates' staff was not made aware of any issue with Doumit until he reported to PNC Park yesterday afternoon complaining of soreness that came overnight. Doumit described the injury to manager John Russell as feeling "more like a pull than a pop," Russell said.
Doumit has no injury history with that wrist. He badly bruised his left wrist in 2007.
Doumit, the Pirates' cleanup hitter, was batting .244 with two home runs, four doubles and nine RBIs. He was replaced last night by Jaramillo.
